Quick answer

To make a ringtone from a song, open the Ringtone Maker, load the song, drag the 30-second selection to the chorus or hook, keep the default 1-second fade in and 2-second fade out, and export as MP3. Android can use the MP3 directly; on iPhone import it with GarageBand or the Finder.

How to use the Ringtone Maker

  1. Load a songChoose any MP3, M4A or WAV file from your phone or computer.
  2. Find the hookA 30-second window is selected automatically. Drag it to the chorus, or use “30 s from playhead”.
  3. Keep the fadesA 1 s fade in and 2 s fade out are pre-set so the ringtone starts and ends smoothly.
  4. Download & setExport MP3, then set it as your ringtone (see the guides below for Android and iPhone).

Ideal ringtone length and settings

  • Length: 20–30 seconds. iPhone ringtones are capped at 40 seconds; Android has no hard limit but calls usually ring for ~25 s.
  • Fade in: 0.5–1.5 s so the first ring isn't startling.
  • Volume: boost quiet acoustic tracks to 120–150% so you can hear them in a pocket.
  • Quality: 128–192 kbps MP3 is plenty for a phone speaker and keeps the file under 1 MB.

How to set the ringtone on Android

  1. Download the MP3 and move it to the Ringtones folder (Files app → Downloads → long-press → Move).
  2. Open Settings → Sound & vibration → Phone ringtone.
  3. Tap + or From device and pick your new file.

How to set the ringtone on iPhone

  1. Save the exported MP3 to the Files app.
  2. Open GarageBand, create an Audio Recorder project, import the file via the loop browser, and trim to under 40 s.
  3. Tap Share → Ringtone, then Use sound as → Standard Ringtone.

On a Mac you can instead rename the file extension to .m4r after converting it to AAC and drag it onto your iPhone in Finder. See our full iPhone ringtone guide.

Frequently asked questions

Can I make a ringtone from a YouTube or Spotify song?

You need the audio file itself. Spotify and Apple Music tracks are DRM-protected and cannot be edited; use songs you own, royalty-free music or your own recordings.

Why does my iPhone not show the ringtone?

iPhone only accepts ringtones of 40 seconds or less in .m4r format imported through GarageBand or Finder. Shorten the clip and follow the steps above.

Can I make a notification or alarm sound too?

Yes. Notification sounds work best at 1–5 seconds; just drag a shorter selection before exporting.

Is MP3 Cutter really free?

Yes. Every feature — cutting, fading, volume, speed and MP3/WAV export — is free with no sign-up, no watermark and no daily limit. The site is supported by unobtrusive ads.

Are my files uploaded to a server?

No. Your audio is decoded and processed entirely inside your browser using the Web Audio API and an MP3 encoder that runs locally. The file never leaves your device, so it works even for private recordings.

Does it work on iPhone, Android and Chromebook?

Yes. MP3 Cutter runs in any modern browser — Safari on iPhone/iPad, Chrome on Android, Chrome OS, Windows, macOS and Linux. No app install is required.
